ToolMatrix
Tool Matrix was my final year project for my BS: a web platform that puts the calculators students actually need in one place, and shows the working rather than just the answer.
It has 79 calculators across 11 categories - maths, statistics, physics, chemistry, finance, health, computer science, information security, unit conversion, everyday information tools and a few fun ones - plus a full scientific calculator. Every calculator can be found from a single search bar, and the whole site works in light and dark themes.
Its headline feature is MathCanvas AI. Students sketch an equation on a drawing canvas, in any colour, with an eraser for mistakes, and the platform reads the handwriting and returns the solution.
We built it as a team. I owned the frontend in React: the design and layout of every page, the calculator interfaces and their results, the drawing canvas behind MathCanvas AI, maths rendering with KaTeX, and the connection to our Node.js/Express and Python backend.
The Challenge
Most students switch between a dozen single-purpose calculator sites, each with its own layout, and very few show how an answer was reached. Worse, none of them help when the problem is written in a notebook rather than typed.
The Solution
One consistent interface for 79 calculators, grouped into 11 categories and reachable from a single search, with step-by-step results rendered as proper mathematical notation. For handwritten problems, MathCanvas AI lets students draw the equation on a canvas instead of translating it into typed syntax.
The Tech Stack
React gave the 79 calculators one consistent interface and a shared search. The HTML Canvas API powers the MathCanvas drawing surface, and KaTeX renders equations and results as real mathematical notation. Node.js and Express serve the application, while Python handles the handwriting recognition and solving behind MathCanvas AI.
The Impact
Delivered as our final year project and deployed live: 79 working calculators across 11 subjects, a handwritten-equation solver, and light and dark themes - a single place for students to calculate, check and understand their work.
